Early years… a family history of health and physical culture

A native of the Hawaiian Islands Karol was born in to an environment surrounded by the elements and the innate beauty of nature.

A history of health and physical culture ran deep in the family as Karol’s grandfather Karol Sr., was a career wrestler who was also the first model for the original Superman cartoons in the 1930s. This also led to being a sought-after trainer and coach for actors and celebrities of the era.

A personal journey into the area of fitness and physical culture began in the late 1970’s when discovering a passion for health and fitness at very young age.

Prior to this an early childhood of being an awkward and unconditioned boy with “girls name” drew its fair share of bullying and scuffles. At this rate it didn’t take a genius to figure out that life continued on this path was not going to be an exceptionally good time.

As a young teenager a good friend and a healthy curiosity led to a local pumping iron gym hidden in a local neighborhood. Old school, was an understatement as basic equipment, loud music, dust, sweat, iron, and testosterone rounded out this primal environment. Discovering this magical place, Karol found himself spending more and more at the gym after school and during summers. This soon led to the owner having him work off his dues by assisting in the gyms daily activities and helping with other members. This time became a turning point as the hours spent at this new home was also and education and a chance to observe and pick the brains of the more experienced lifters. The informal education paid off to a point that by his mid-teens power lifts were being performed at a state level for his age group. Friends at school also started asking for help on how to get bigger and stronger themselves.

Airborne school and the beginning of the mind body and spirit connection

Training and discipline combined with a healthy dose of genetics made it easy to max out the U.S. Army physical fitness test and pass through basic, advanced training, and airborne school while still 17 years of age.

Encouragement was also given to coach and help other soldier in the unit with their fitness in order to maintain mandatory fitness levels. These experiences helped to feed what would eventually become a lifelong interest in empowering and sharing with others the benefits of health and fitness. During this time exposure to martial arts, yoga, and other disciplines only added to the exploring of connecting the physical with the mental and the spiritual.

Teaching and training at Martial Arts schools and gyms in Americas Pacific Northwest led to experience in fitness management and program design for Martial arts, Self-Defense, and Yoga based stretching. Interaction with clients and students from a variety of backgrounds and age groups always provided a continual chance for growth and learning. Continuing to explore and combine exercise science with martial arts, yoga and other activities a different kind of balance started to evolve.

A search of knowledge, wherever you go there you are

In the years that followed… this search for knowledge and learning has led to studies and training at temples, schools and camps throughout the United States and around the world. Holistic healing, body work, yoga and meditation have added balance to the ever-evolving martial arts and sports medicine studies. Education gained has extended through cultures as well as geographical regions and has been a continuous and evolving journey.
Immersion in to the power of silent meditation, mindfulness, and moving mediation have been learned and experienced in Buddhist temples and other places of origin.
Experiences in martial arts and yoga were gained throughout India, Asia and the Himalayan Mountains.
Adventure, lumps, bruises, humor and great friendships are still found studying indigenous martial arts in various parts of Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
To this day the education continues. Medical massage and sports medicine have continued to be practiced and studied. Experiences in other traditional forms of bodywork from the areas of Asia and Polynesia have led to a balance of blending the healing arts with the physical, martial, and spiritual.

Mother Nature’s Gym and world travel

With no better teacher than experience gained first hand, a variety of challenges of the mind, body, and spirit have been embarked upon.
It’s an intriguing area of study and practice ranging from trekking through the Himalayas, competing in triathlons, trail runs, marathons and various martial arts competitions. Working and training for extended periods of time in diverse condition such as the Bering Sea, or travelling on international tours have been a memorable part of the journey.

This culmination of experience has led to working with clients on a variety of levels from individuals to entire families, corporations, and celebrity entertainers. Depending on the need or location this can sometimes lead to multiple duties from that of trainer, massage therapist, and Yogi to personal assistant or close security.

It’s a fortunate life which enables learning and interacting with people from all backgrounds and walks of life on a very positive level. It’s also a great platform for the continual journey of discovery and growth.

Becoming your own patient

Many times, a part of our journey is the practice of self-care. Mindful nutrition and management for fasting and detox programs have led to further use and exploration in these practices on a professional and a personal level.
Corrective exercise and rehabilitative programs administered to others have also been experienced and applied first-hand.

In 2017 the rehabilitation from a fractured spine and other injuries sustained as the result of a ten-meter fall became a new and challenging experience. Working with mobility and movement while regaining the ability to walk, pins and screws which had been placed in a compromised spine were able to be removed in half the normal time. Working to regain freedom and range of motion which had often taken for granted was a completely new test of pain-management, research, patience and self-care.
